Also there is a cable with a white plug end. Is that plugged into your drive? -

After viewing some of the search results, does this sound like the same problem you are having?
yes...i tried the method of getting into the registry and deleting the specified key but it didnt work...maybe it only works for xp?
i installed nero about 2 months ago....ive uninstalled it but that hasnt helped
well...when i open up my computer...neither of my cd drives are there to select. the same when i do a search..in the pull down menu..there is no option to select either one of my drives what could this be thats causing this?
No need to get into it that far, You have or had nero installed I see. Even if you uninstall nero it will still be in there you cant remove it all without going into the reg or using a cleaning tool from nero. So you will need to reinstall nero and do the following below to restore the drives. Or go to nero and get the clean tool. It will be under nero tool cleaner. Eitherway you can install nero again and do the following below.
Go into nero or open up nero, then go into preferences (config) and you will see ( eject cd after burning complete) "uncheck the box" You will need to eject manually. You are loosing your drive from nero and that being checked. I could go into why, but Why. To long .
Your problem will be over with your drive missing. Enjoy. -
I have ME in an eMachine and actually like ME.
One of my atapi drives is not in the bios and the other is. The bios doesn't matter once you are into Windows.
YOU HAVE ALL OVERLOOKED THE OBVIOUS. How long has it been since you cleaned your pc? If it's running ME, it's 3 or 4 years old. Your optical drives are probably full of dust. Get a couple of cans of air, take the box outside, stand upwind and give those dust bunnies a new home. If the lasers are dirty, your drives will cease to exist.
They may have been spiked by a power surge, too. I've seen that happen too many times in other people's machines. My emachine is behind two surge protectors and a 1300 watt Fortress that used to guard an AS400. -

Anyway the lasers do not get dirty, its the lense that gets dust on it and the laser cant read through it or the mirrors get dirty in the assembly that the laser is in. The top portion on the assembly is the focus lense which moves in and out (up & down ) which focuses the laser. Thats what usually gets dust on it. The drives never will cease to exist with a dirty lense. -
I've "seen" cd drives 'disappear' because they were dirty, and I've seen cd drives that appeared to work(would open and close and the front light would blink) but would not show up. Also, certain memory resident boot sector viruses like NYB can cause higher drives (D, E, etc) to disappear. I removed NYB from a friend's pc, but to even detect it's presence required a cold boot from a non-dos (Caldera Linux)floppy.
