    Windows ME

That might be a huge reason right there.

    I recommend upgrading to XP.

I can't even give my copy of ME away.

    Noone will take it.

No offense but ME BLOWS. I had it and it F@#KED my hard drive and I lost everything. I used to "Recover" ME at least once a week. Micro$ofts worst OS ever made.

    Soooooooooo.........
Just reformat ME. That's what I would do.

    or...........

Take the side off the computer and unplug the power cords to the CD-DVD devices.. Boot it up, shut down. Then plug them back in and see if WinME "Sees" them, It won't, so unplug everything, take the computer outside and repeatadly smash it with a hammer or a very large rock.

I would save all your info you want then do a "Clean install" of WindowsME. If you can't "Find" XP anywhere then put windows 98 on it. ANYTHING is better than ME

  7. i would reformat...but the only drive i can open is my n drive and my comp doesnt seem to be able to read the reformat disk when its in that drive

    Put in the cd.

    Reboot
Go into the bios and tell it to boot from cd.

You can usually get into the bios by hitting the delete key when rebooting.

No guessing required its in your computer details. :P

Are both drives on the same ide cable, could be a dodgey/poorly seated cable. On my current motherboard one of the IDE channels failed completely hence the drives attached to it dissapeared. I bought a PCI ide adapter card to get them back online.

  12. should i press or hold? and when exactly in the booting up process?

when i hold any of the mentioned buttons i get a horrible sound coming from my comp..and it doesnt seem to bring the bios up..

all i get occasionally is something like "windows is updating..please wait"

and then im booted but i see no bios screen

  14. Depending on your machine, 99.9999999% of the time to get to the BIOS you press the DELETE key. Start pressing the delete key really fast or you can hold it down, your choice. Then turn our computer on. It should show your video BIOS (If you have a Card) then show the BIOS Screen. From there you choose boot sequence. It's usually under the 2nd option. There's a few different BIOS menus. Then make CD-ROM 1st then floppy then HD.

Press F10 (SAVE & ExIT) then it should reboot. But make sure you have the WindowsME CD-ROM in the drive or it won't do anything

    Have fun

    What does this mean?

  15. *about to have a nervous breakdown*

well i have just spent an hour trying to get into bios.....i have both held and tapped f1 thru f12, del, and combinations of alll of these REPEATEDLY!

nothing has worked...im not this lame usually with things like this...i did manage to get into the bios once...but i was randomly smashing my keyboard so i dont know what exactly allowed for it...

i have a hp pavilion xt936...and windows me...according to what ive read online, my trigger to get into bios should be f1 or f2, ive tried both numerous times along with the others listed above to no avail...

if i continue to be lame in getting into the bios...is there any other thing i could do to see whats going on with my drives?

You could take them out and put them in a working computer.

What burning apps have you installed or uninstalled lately?

Do a google search on upperfilter and lowerfilter
    http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&q=CDrom+upperfilter

After viewing some of the search results, does this sound like the same problem you are having?

If not, then you may need to reinstall.

  21. BTW, I had a similar problem. My CDR drive dissappeared after I tried to uninstall EZ CD creator.......I tried to reinstall it after I found my missing drive. then I tried installing another burning app after EZ CD would reinstall. I ended up jacking the whole thing up to the point no burning app would word and I could never get my drive back. I said srew it and reinstalled the OS....Then I saw the posts on the upper and lower CD filters

If memory servers me right, I even think it was on EZ CD's support site

Not sure if this is still the case, but Roxio's burning drivers used to conflict with WMP. If the Roxio drives were older than WMP it would hose the system. I have installed EZCD AFTER WMP9 and been unable to access my optical drives. On the other hand. if I install EZCD first and THEN WMP9, I have no issues.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

yes...i tried the method of getting into the registry and deleting the specified key but it didnt work...maybe it only works for xp?

  24. Slave it to another "Good" hard drive and slick it that way. Then throw you winME disk across the yard and see how far it goes. Get xp any way you can (it's only $89.00US, go to pricewatch.com) and use that from now on (2000 and NT) are good too..

    Yep, you are right smokey,

    I didn't catch that.

See if your ide cable is connected to your cd drive, and check if the power is connected to it as well.
