  1. Is there any good software out there to clean up my system registry a bit. I use to use Nuts and Bolts several years ago and every so often I could use it to get rid of a bunch of old registry entries no longer in use. I haven't used any such programming since moving to XP. So is it even beneficial to do something like this?

Norton WinDoctor (part of SystemWorks) seems to do an acceptable job, imo.

Is it beneficial to do this? Who knows. Do I care if there are invalid entries in my registry? Not really, i reinstall Windows every 4-6 months anyhow

I have used RegSeeker for the last year and it seems to work great. It doesn't require any registry entries of it's own (nice) and it makes a backup of the registry keys it cleans up. It's free. Here's a link:

    Ditto Norton WinDoctor. Good app.

For adware/spyware Spybot Search and Destroy works well, and if it can't fix the registry entry you can highlight it, right-click, and it'll take you right to the registry key for editing

Norton WinDoctor is actually part of Norton Utilities (which comes with Systemworks).

On my Systemworks CD, there is an NU directory. In there is a Setup.exe. I ran that, and as expected it runs Norton Utilities Setup. Choosing a custom installation...

So yeah, it can be installed separately

  7. thanks I'll give it a go. Might wait a bit though. I think my computer has gotten so full of conflicting softwares that its about time for a complete reformat and reinstall.

I think if you need the other stuff that comes with SystemWorks it may be worth the $70. For just registry cleaning I still recommend RegSeeker (free) or Registry Mechanic ($30) from the Winguides Tweak people. Free trial available.

I like RegCleaner. It's free, very powerful and no need to install. Just run the exe. I've used it on 98, W2K and XP. Works great!
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........

I prefer the registry cleanup tool called "format" myself.

I tried that once and none of my programs worked. I couldn't even get into Window$.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

I believe they purchased the rights to RegClnr which used to be freeware. Now they charge for it. It was a good program but they really haven't improved it, just started charging for it.
