Does anyone have any thoughts on instead of recording in 2 or 2.5 hour mode on a DVD Recorder....breaking up the recording into several higher quality 1 hour mode discs....then editing them and joining them in a computer? I have been pondering doing such a thing to maximize the quality of the recording. My 1 hour mode is simply stunning on my Philips Recorder....the two hour mode is very nice as well but...I was curious about the scenario of letting something like DVDShrink re-encode the two 1 hour discs into the exact DVD size. Would the quality be better or worse? Do you think it would be worth the effort?

Definitely worth trying. DVDShrink does a pretty good job. I only had one DVD that it backed up that I considered "unwatchable" but that was only because the original, store-bought DVD had been encoded using a marginal bitrate so as to fit more episodes onto the disc and reduce costs :P

I finally did my test today. Two "one hour" discs....created an oversized project in TMPGEnc DVD Author....loaded to DVDShrink and the resulting DVD is simply amazing. MUCH better than the "two hour" mode results I would get from the Philips machine in my opinion.
