There are a few reports floating around the net, that indicate some sort of conflict with the Windows Service Pack 2 update and DivX software. Although we have not seen this ourselves, there is no doubt about it as the DivX support page is offering a "workaround".

Unfortunately, the temporary fix involves disabling a new security feature called: Data Execution Prevention or DEP. Here is the complete support page for your perusal from the good folks at DivX.

Some of our products may not work with Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 when a feature called Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is enabled. DEP is enabled by default in Service Pack 2. Typical symptoms include the following:

DivX

* The DivX codec may not appear in the list of available video compressors
DivX Pro
* The DivX Pro codec may not appear in the list of available video compressors

Dr DivX

* The Dr DivX installer may exit before installation is completed
* The DivX Pro codec may not appear in the list of available video compressors
* Right-clicking files in Windows Explorer may cause Explorer to crash
* Data Execution Prevention may also cause other software on your system that has not been specifically designed for SP2 compatibility to fail.

A short-term solution to DEP incompatibility is to disable DEP. Disabling DEP is a security risk, and will increase the vulnerability of your computer to certain types of attacks, but no more so than was possible under Windows XP Service Pack 1, which did not include the DEP feature.

If you choose to disable DEP, we recommend that you try to update all your software and drivers to Windows XP SP2-compatible versions as soon as they are released, and then re-enable the DEP feature. DivXNetworks will be releasing SP2-compatible versions of all affected products shortly. We also recommend the use of up-to-date anti-virus and firewall software at all times.

How to disable DEP

To disable DEP, perform the following actions:

* Click Start -> Run
* Enter Notepad %SYSTEMDRIVE%Boot.ini
* Under [operating systems] replace the parameter /NoExecute=xxxxx with /Execute
Save the Boot.ini file
* Restart your computer

IMPORTANT: Save a copy of your original Boot.ini file as a backup before you make changes!

You can decide for yourselves what you would like to do of course. The DivX web page is worth a visit, as at the bottom of the support page they provide a notify by email button, to automaticaly make you aware if this page is updated.

My immediate reaction is suspicious as usual, figuring this is some dark scheme of Microsoft to rule the video compression world. But, due to past bugs in software from other updates i.e. when we all went to XP, I have come to believe that these things just happen. As you can read here on Microsofts support page, certain software behaviors can cause new problems now. Apparently, this is not what DivX is doing, as we can read above that there are other issues to contend with, plus I am sure they must have tried this. But, if you run across this error in another program, maybe this could help.

There are also some rumblings about P2P being hampered in certain situations. For instance, the service pack is apparently limiting simultaneous connections to ten, whereas in the previous service pack, this was unlimited.

The real culprits here, are these "individuals" that write, run or spread scripts and worms that cause us to have to strengthen our systems against these annoying attacks. For those that are curious about this latest massive update from Microsoft, you can read all about it at this address.

sounds like the problems I'm having. I guess I've been getting SP2 piece by piece as the critical updates come out. about a month ago explorer started crashing at random. Last few time error reporting has directed me to a page concerning Divx. What a pain in the butt. Might just try dropping Divx and using ffdshow. I never encoded to Divx anyway, always Xvid. So all I need for Divx is decoding.

Even better, just don't upgrade to it. After all them SP packs are nothing more than a major pain in the ass.

I mean there suppose to do this and that but all they do is cause problems.

So i'll not be upgrading.

I don't think its specifically a SP2 problem. I've had the explorer craches like I said and I have not done an upgrade to SP2. Its just from critical updates I think. I uninstalled Divx a bit earlier and so far haven't had any more crashes.

I read that it does not limit ports, it just closes them when they are not in use. Also, the new Microsoft firewall still blows, it didn't even throw off my NAT settings in bittorrent. :P

Just curious how many installed sp2 from windows and how many from an intergrated winxp sp2 cd doing a fresh install.I did the latter and havent had any issues at all.

My Service Pack 2 came along with Windows XP Professional Edition. Now that I think about it, everyone I know, besides Baldrick, has had problems with Service Pack 2 via update.

My Divx plays fine with SP2 installed. I've had no issues with it yet.

SP2 replaces SP1, there would be no reason to rerun it. Doing so would likely CAUSE problems.

Since this is an upgrade (not a full install) you may need to fix your OS at some point... what then? I know how much pain was dealing with regular WinXP and SP1 (separate) upgrade. SP2 is a "deeper" digging update, I smell problems...
It's not an option for me to reinstall (in case) I'd need few days for that (too much stuff). I may try SP2 integrated but not at this point.

Uninstalling SP2 sounds like a death sentence to your PC.

SP2 replaces SP1, there would be no reason to rerun it. Doing so would likely CAUSE problems.

as quoted. sp2 simply REPLACES sp1. after reading all the posts here from people being told this and they still need to ask what about sp1 it is very simple.....

use SP2 when you would have used SP1.

basicly SP2 has all of SP1 inside it so you no longer need SP1 unless it is a windows xp sp1 integrated installation cd like i have seen people ask about and in that case THAT is NOT SP1.

if this jusy confuses you even more then i doubt very much anyone is going to be able to help you on this. really its simple.

Just to clarify:

The full SP2 package lets you create a Uninstall backup. So, if you desire it seems that you can rollback. I saw that my directory of $backup$ had about 460MB.

It seems that an SP1 over SP2 would not be even possible because of the newer files detection... but, i haven't (and will not) tried.
