Does anyone have an INKLING of how to capture a video from vhs using VirtualDub? Please don't tell me to go to the "How To" page....that tells me sweet f*ck all! I need a step-by-step method here. I've tried/read everything and nothing's working. I get snowstorm on VDub when I press 'play' on the vcr. If someone can help me and tell me what I'm doing wrong, I'd appreciate it. I have everything ready to go here, just tell me what I need to do. THANKS!!!!

  2. any response you get here will never be as comprehensive as reading a guide. try luke's video guide in the links section, or mine if you're really desperate

  3. make sure your source is corect.

if you have a tuner, select the composite or svideo input. check your plugs too. most problems are a result of poor preparation. get to it, boy!

I am using an All-in-wonder PRO 8meg AGP card with Windows 2000 to pull a few movies off a VHS tape.

Since I do not know what you have for a capture card, I'll just tell you the caveats I encountered when I tried to run an old card on a 'relatively' new OS:

I had to download Beta drivers from ATI
-after installing drivers I found the VFW<->WDM wrapper (somewhere on google) and installed it
-once I checked that the actual TV-card worked under the OS (ie I could view stuff from composite, watch tv, etc) I opened up VirtualDub

    Under FILE --> Capture
--at this point it opened up a small window with TV display (the default for my card)

I went to VIDEO --> Source, and used the gay looking driver dialog box to manually change the source of my video (tv/composite/svideo)

this portion is actually a function of the wrapper, rather than virtualdub.

I know I could not capture until I had the settings for video source set correctly, and audio too (they didn't save when I closed the program, another pain).

but otherwise it worked (albeit only 320x240).

after I had the source set correctly, I used the buttons in the lower-right-hand corner of virtualdub to set the frame rate (NTSC) and audio quality (44100-mono)

Hit the function key (think it's F5?) to begin capture.

I didn't have any problems after that.

have you tested the output of your capture card? (ie can you view signals coming from the vcr using tools that came with the card itself?)

have you been able to do ANY kind of capture with this device? using any other toolds (included/shareware/etc)?

in device manager, do you have a VfW driver object for the capture device (mileage may vary on this one, its only what I noticed when I installed the wrapper).

    hope this helps....

    How to

Launch your tv-application and select the channel you want to capture from. Exit your tv application.

Launch VirtualDub and select File->Capture AVI and the capture mode will start.

To capture from line in,composite or svhs change the source in Virtualdub under Video->Source.

did you set your tv application to channel 3 or 4 whatever your vcr is set up for?
