  1. Hi,

I am a newbie with converting anything to dvdr. I want to learn how to store tv shows (divx) to dvdr instead of eating up my HD. I am using tmpgenc and how the following directions to change the settings

Click "setting" in TMPGEnc to bring up the "MPEG setting" options. There are 6 tabs in here that control everything you need.
If it's not selected already, click the "VIDEO" tab. Now under the "size" selector box in the VIDEO tab input 352x480. Make sure that your aspect ratio set to 4:3 and your framerate to 29.97.
Choose 2-pass VBR for "Rate control mode". Use the "setting" button to enter these VBR values: Average 3200, Maximum 5500, Minimum 200.
Choose NTSC as your format (I assume) then interlace for the encode mode.
Down below these is the "motion precision search" selector. Choose either high or highest quality.
Now click the "GOP Structure" tab, make sure detect scene change is selected.
Now click the "Quantize Matrix" tab and change the "default" value to "CG/Animation" from the drop down selector.
Finally click the "Audio" tab and make sure your audio is set to Layer-II, 48000Hz and stereo. Choose 192kps for the bitrate.

Ok, encode this sucker and you should be looking at an easy 6 or even 8 1/2 hour episodes per disc or about 3 hrs of total play time. Good luck.

Is this correct, If so, I proceed to select 'System(Video+Audio)' on tmpgenc to encode.

I will create an mpeg-2 mpg. How do I convert this file to VOB for burning to dvdr. Is there any easy program or steps?

    Thanks,

    Rage

Tmpgenc Dvd Author is an excellent and easy program to create your menu and to create the necessary dvd files. I use it for all of my video captures. You can also use it to burn if running win 2k or win xp.
P.S. For 352x480 3000k average and 4000k max, IMO, is sufficient. This is what I use and get excellent results.

  3. I wrote these directions for another thread, and they will do the job well, but if you are encoding divx you may need to change a few things.
Your shows are probably encoded at 23.976fps instead of 29.97. If you load them into TMPGEnc and the frame rate says "23.976fps (internally 29.97)" and the encode mode says "3:2 pulldown when playback" leave those settings alone because bumping them up won't do anything positive.
Also if these shows aren't animated, use the default matrix instead of the CG/Animation.

@tigerman8u- I think that 3000avg and 4000max is probably enough, but I bump it up a little because I want to burn right to the end of the disc and not leave hundreds of Mb blank. With these settings you should be able to put 3 hours (four 45min episodes) of great video per disc with no wasted space.
