  1. I tried to analyze one of my DVDs using DVD Shrink, however, I got a CRC error. When I looked at the bottom of the DVD, close to one of the edges, there was a shape that looked kind of like the letter "C"

It's hard to describe, but there's clearly something there. It looks like there's a raised section and it has the shape of the letter "C". It's about one centimeter in diameter. Anyone know what that could be? Is that's whats causing the problem?

Do you mean preliminary or deep analysis? Is the disc a pressed DVD or a DVDR? Is it a scratch? If it is deep analysis, did you get the error towards the end of the analysis? If so, it might have to do with it since it is near the edge. Try to scan with DVDInfoPro to see if the surface is damaged.

Lordsmurf has put together an interesting page about media. If you scroll down the page about halfway you'll see some pics of defective media with dye irregularities. Right above it he mentions some brands that will suffer from dye melt if burned too fast (read:hacked firmware).

  4. Sorry for not providing more info:

It's a retail DVD. I only did the preliminary scan with DVD Shrink. I'll scan it with DVD Info Pro and let you know what happens.

Try to rip the dvd using alternatives eg dvd decrypter and smart ripper.

  6. I ran DVD Info Pro and it reported over 1200 errors. So it's a defective disc?

    Maybe. Maybe not.
All that TRULY means is your drive cannot read it. A good drive is needed to determine this (DVD-ROM, not burners ... unless burner has awesome reader laser).

And DECRYPTER is surely not the best software for recovery. I give that award to ISOBUSTER PRO (paid version, not a hack, not the free one). I just got finished with some error discs, all I needed was ISOBUSTER PRO (as DVD Decrypter choked).

Of course, if you've got CSS on that disc, you may be screwed.
    Buy another one if possible.

Try the best ROM drive you can find (LG and BTC are great ROM drives).
