  1. I ripped a dvd and received the vob files for it.I read several articles about converting the vob files to a mpeg format. As i am quite new at this video stuff i do not understand what i need to do.
I've got vobedit, now when i want to use it to convert to mpeg it gives me all the vob files from the dvd.Which of these files do i use to convert?
I would appreciate all help or tutorials that will explain this for me.

What are you trying to create as your final product? Just mpegs or a DVD or VCD?

VOB files are MPEG files already. Sometimes a quick and dirty method is to simply rename the file with ".mpg" instead of ".vob". It doesn't always work with all editors though.

  8. My technique:
    • Rip DVD
    • Run DvdShrink to extract just the movie or clip that I want. Also, remove unwanted audio streams.
    • Get a command window (like a dos prompt window but not really) and cd to the output directory of DvdShrink.
    • If there is just one file VTS_01_0.VOB just rename it to MyVid.mpg.
    • If there are multiple VTS_01_?.VOB files type the command:
COPY /B VTS_01_0.VOB VTS_01_1.VOB (list remaining vob files here) MyVid.mpg
This will join all the files together to create the final file.

Sometimes, just a simple rename of a VOB file will work but many times a single VOB file can contain many short videos/advertisements and contain many audio tracks such that it is just useless. The DvdShrink method will make sure you get what you want. It also allows you to select a range of the video to save.

  9. Just demux the VOB files to elementary streams. You'll get the MPEG2 and associated audio files.
