    Actually, it's a very convenient method. It doesn't interfere with that Silver Spoon, and when in need, a healthy dose of Weck's red chile will produce the necessary information rather quickly.

    Maybe I should have said 24 inches. Although who am I to say it wasn't two feet?

    I don't know whether it could be done, but I'd like to see a breakdown of the post counts of thread-starters in groups i.e.

    thread starter has < 20 posts 15%
    20 --> 40 posts 10% etc etc.

    I hope you would find that people generally find the search feature by about 50 posts.

    The other thing I'd like to see is a breakdown of "How many threads you've started", grouped by forum just like your overall post stats. Perhaps that could make it easier to ascertain posters' knowledge or lack thereof in certain fields.

    What about allowing the original poster to rate each reply based on the degree of effectiveness/how helpful the reply was ? Each user could then have their own rating of how helpful they are. It would act as a signpost for noobs who do not know who the trolls are and provide guidance for who to listen to and who to ignore.


    Naturally all these would have to exclude OT. I guess if you included it the true post-whores would come to the fore.

  4. When I first started coming here, the amount of information was simply overwhelming to me. Though I did read until I found what I was looking for, often one question led to another, and so on; I found myself reading the equivelant of a thick book before I was through.

    That's fine, but newbie or not, when someone wants to know something, and they don't want to spend the time to read through pages and pages of information on the subject that they may or may not comprehend well to begin with, it's easier to simply ask the specific question and receive a quick reply similar to a one-on-one response. (I kind of thought that was one of the nice things about boards like this.) I've been running a MIDI Forum for the past decade, and of course, newbies still ask those same questions I've answered a hundred times. But I guess I don't mind it as much as others seem to. As long as there's newbies, I've come to expect and accept it -- regardless of providing FAQ's and How To's. I enjoy helping the newbies and the experienced.

    Maybe just make part of the site registration process reading FAQ's and guides a requirement before signup is completed.

    HEY Y'ALL Lighten up! Yes this site is about learning. But I think that the spirit of it is to have some fun too. There will always be newbs in any area of life. FNG in the army, Greenhorn, Rookie, CIT, Probie whatever you want to call them. If it bothers you to help, then don't help, I wouldn't want you to be unhappy. If it makes you feel good to help, then help. If you can give some solid direction to someone you are doing a good thing. A little hazing or teasing ain't all that bad either, provided that you at least make up for it in the end, and offer up at least a link or a "read the guide to the left". I have seen some hard jumps on people for being stupid or lazy, and I see no reason for taking out your frustration on a stranger who only wants to learn somthing.(Even if it is right in front of their face or a click or two away) If you are going to jump on a newb at least make it clever so that it has some entertainment value. The plain old RTFM is getting old. And flying off into a rage doesn't make anyone look too bright themselves.

    You miss the point. No one is saying being new is bad. But some questions make it obvious the person made little or no effort to find the answer on their own.

    Can a CD burner burn DVD's?
    Can a car fly?

    If the question was "I can't get DVD Shrink to work", at least it would appear the person tried to help themselves first. Heck, all you need to do is pick up a CD burner box to find out what discs are compatable.

    If a family member asked the question, you'd likely give them a look b4 answering it. Thats all the first replier did, IMO.

    I don't think that I missed the point. Let me explain what I got out of the first post and a few that followed.
    PART ONE: Some people here are frustrated that newbs are asking questions that have been asked a thousand times before, and that it doesn't appear that they have taken even the smallest effort to find an answer on their own.
    PART TWO: Some feel that there should be some sort of mechinism or proceedure that whould alert others of this or automaticly direct the said newb to an area that could help them.
    MY THOUGHTS: I am not bitching about the newbs. I am trying to lessen any negitive feedback to them and help the more senior members relax in knowing that they are not forced to reply to anything that they don't want to. As far as Kill the noobs goes, it is a joke, sarcasim. Sometimes tone dosen't carry well in text so we tend to use punctuation or little smilies to show this. It is like after a coach tells his players that they are the worst that he has ever seen and then he tells them that he has made the same mistakes himself before and he knows where they are coming from and how they feel.
    I have said before that this site can be a bit hard to use for the uninitiated, but I don't think that banning or restricting any noobs is a good idea. I ain't no angel and I have no right to force behavior on anyone but being polite to people is a good idea.(if the guys at work find out that I said this I will lose my nasty reputation)

    Thank goodness I'm not alone! And jimmalenko, thanks for popping up here . We all want to help newbies, it just would be nice if some would experiment on there own first. What's so hard about clicking the faq button???? Oh well.

    There are other self-help forums with this sort of thing already. One that comes to mind is this one. In this case, a user poses a question and, if and when a reply is posted that solves the problem, they can 'Accept' the answer. Then the Accepted Answer is flagged.

    For example:

    Suppose a question is asked and a year on, the topic has grown to five pages. If you searched and found this you'd think 'Oh no!' at having to read five pages worth that may or may not be of any help at all. Supposing the Accepted Answer was the third post on page four, clicking an Accepted Answer link to jump directly to that Answer would cut down on user frustration no end. Then, possibly, a rating of that Answer could be put in place for all future searchers which could be weighted according to rating. That, however, would be Baldrick'sn coding nightmare...

    This could help tremendously here, what with all the OT posts of single smilies/trolls/abuse/general uselessness/etc. People can search for a similar problem to theirs and if there was an Accepted Answer, they could jump straight to that post.
