  1. Hi,

I am looking for a Divx (avi) encoder for the Mac that will retain my 5.1 audio sound within the finished outcome. I have been using a program called Handbrake which is simple and one of the greatest conistant programs I have come across but it unfortunately downmuxes the audio to stereo only.

I use Handbrake and encode my DVDs so that I can store them on an external HD and play and access them via my Elgato EyeHome device but having converted a few of my DVDs I have realised Handbrake doesnt retain Dolby Surround (though rumour is the next version might).

I have played around with FFMPEGx and checked the audio on various conversion methods it has via the Quicktime movie info box and they are all normal stereo.

Anyway is there a Divx (avi) encoder that can retain my Dolby 5.1?

    Thanks,
    David

  2. If you select AC3 as the audio codec in ffmpegx, it does not downmix to stereo. In fact it doesn't alter the AC3 at all.

  3. Ah,

Thanks, Im not used to using FFMPEGx...I began my DVD ripping using Handbrake and D-Vision and had problems installing the various codecs etc in FFMPEGx so never really looked at it much, I'll give it a go.

    Thanks
    David
