How do I fix crackly knobs on my bass amp, computer speakers, and other electronics.

By "crackly knob", I mean there is an in and out, distorted and crackle noise when you turn the (usually volume) knob, or sometimes without turning it but it is in a certain position.

This problem plagues me like crazy and has made my Hartke 120 watt amp unusable. Please help.

I am sure that if I said that I had "crackly knobs" I would never hear the end of it.
No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space.

    Well, my wording was intentional.

yeah, usually cleaning. If that doesn't work, there are 3 possibilities. They are listed in the order of most likely to least likely.

    1) The spaekers themselves are blown and the sound causes the coil to move in and out of alignment. (depends on the type of crackling you hear)

    2) There's a short/open, fray, corrosion on a wire. (older speakers in humid environments get this once in a while)

    3) The POT (potentiometer or variable resistor) is old or wearing out. (usually only hapens under extreme use of turning the knobs.)

You would have had a bunch of wise-ass replies like "She said knobs" or "Don't you get that from dry skin?"

I've tried to get the guys to behave when you're around, babyboo. I don't want them to drive you off in disgust. On the other hand, if you haven't hit the bricks by now, chances are you may be "one of us", hee hee

I was this close (| |) to starting a new thread about babyboo's crackly knobs, but really didn't want to piss off Capmaster. I will however make sure Northcat sees this, so expect the comments shortly!

This is my guess. You should be able to purchase new ones (pots) & solder them into place. I've had to replace noisy pots on my guitar & volume pedal.

  13. Actually radio shack sells a spray for 'manual switches' that lubes the contacts. I used to use it all the time to eliminate the 'scratchies' in an old car radio I had

The crackly knobs gag was too obvious. There needed to be something a little better for a good turn out.

Here's what I got in the way of jokes.

I almost didn't check this thread thinking it was about granny-sex.

    You've got crackly knobs?
    --
Try using a lubricant or lotion. If it starts bleeding, use Neosporing as a Lubricant. You'll need a large tube.

Crackly knobs are possibly due to old age & extended use or stretched skin from being preggo or not putting down the fork.
