I've had my plextor for about 4 years, I think. Recently, it's been having trouble reading audio cds. I thought it might be itunes, but windows media player also has the same problem. The drive sounds like it's having buffer problems. It whines for a couple of seconds, then stops and repeats. The audio skips every few seconds. My dvd-rom drive reads and rips music fine.
Time for a new drive, or is there some kind of simple fix? I'm about ready to pick up a dvd burner, so it's a good a time as any to upgrade the drive.

Does it do it for cd's or just the audio ones that you make (CD-R) If it does it will all of them I would think maybe the lense is dirty. Or it's time to get a new one.

I haven't tried a self burnt cd, but I've tried multiple commercial cds. None of them work properly. It reads data cds fine, and can access video files without skipping. That's where I'm confused.
