  1. I used firewire to transfer my 34 minute home video to the hard drive. It took up about 6 GB. I edited the movie to just the way I want it. Which program do I use to shrink it down to one CD in SVCD format? I was able to convert the AVI to MPG and it shrunk the movie to about 1 GB with little or no loss in quality. Can someone just point me in the right direction... what programs do I use in what order to get this 1 GB MPG down to one SVCD? Or should I capture as MPG and then convert to AVI? I have tried to use the tutorials to the left... but I don't see any references to file size... Thanks.

I don't know what bitrate you used but I would suggest that it's too high so you end up with a file size that is too large for your needs. You'll need to re-encode the video using a bit rate that will get your video size to no more than 800Mb (for an 80min CD) or about 740Mb for a 74min CD. There are bit rate calculators around (check the Tools section) to help but if you stick to the SCVD standard of 2600 kb/s max you should be just about right on target. Good luck.

  3. I appreciate the info. Do I set the bitrate during initial capture to my hard drive? Or do I set the bitrate when converting to an MPG from AVI? Or do I even need to go through the process of converting from AVI to MPG?
    Thanks again.

Set the bitrate when you are encoding from AVI to MPEG. There will be an option somewhere in your encoder to set it.
