I have .mkv files I need to convert to .mpg to put on dvd. Everything works fine, except it always chooses the english audio and subtitles, and I would much rather prefer japanese with english subtitles.
I'm using TMPGenc to convert, and I have virtualdubmod installed (Which I RARELY use, so plese give newbie instructions if I need to use it)
Basically, I just want to rip out and throw away the english audio, and keep the japanese audio. I know both audio streams are there because they're selectable when I play in WMPC. Help appreciated thanx!

convert the japanase to wav and use it in tmpgenc
in virtualdubmod
open the mkv
click on streams->stream list
select the japanase and click save wav -
Tried that, when I try to open the .wav through windows explorer or TMPGenc it says file unsupported.

what is the audio format? check with virtualdmod. virtualdubmod doesn't convert to wav all the time.

Looks like if I disable the english audio, enable the jap audio, choose direct stream video, and save as .mkv file, then it defaults to japanese, and gets rid of the english.
Then I can just load it with TMPGenc and convert from there. If this stops working, I'll check with virtualmod and go from there.http://www.electricquarter.com - Classic and modern videogames and accessories, from atari, to nintendo, to the playstation and Xbox! -
Hey, ya got me into the right area at least, heh.

Ugh, the .mkv now plays with jap audio, and eng subtitles, but when I use TMPGenc to convert to .mpg the subtitles disappear. So how do I merge the subtitles permanently into the video?
Man I HATE .mkv files, can't understand WHY it's necessary for some people to release on .mkv instead of .avihttp://www.electricquarter.com - Classic and modern videogames and accessories, from atari, to nintendo, to the playstation and Xbox! -
you may have to use virtualdub and save the mkv as avi. vd has sub filters which will display the subtitles. use the new avi to encode with tmpgenc.

that's one thing that confuses me about mkv files. unlike ogm files, the subtitles are not saved as a separate stream but embedded somewhere.

I tried that first and every time I try to save as .avi it gives me misc errors depend on how I choose to stream it (simply crashing with direct stream, to can't process frame 0 with full proicessing mode)

Yo, check this post so see if you could make it through. There are 2 of them (mine is the second (NightScream) so try them out).
