  1. Hello, people.
If you don't know what these programs are, never mind.
If you do however then you should be aware of the "partially downloaded files disappearing" bug. Anybody found a way around this yet? Please don't just say "back-up your files to an other directory" as I do this, but nine times out of ten when client loads it deletes my partial downloads, even though I had paused d/l and exit correctly.
Anyone has a more advanced tip to share? Cheers to all

  2. The only times I've had that happen in Morpheus is when my computer crashed while downloading. Sometimes it even recovers after a crash. I often spend several days of stoping and starting to download vids from Morpheus.

Do you have both clients using the same directory? That might be causing troubles, one may erase the others temp files.

  3. I've got grokster, kazaa, and morpheus all sending their files to the same directory. no probs. I usually use grokster because it connects faster then the other two.

musiccity and gnutella networks need to hook up to be a huge file sharing program with 1 million + people. That would be sweet.

  4. Yeh i know what you mean SupaCoopa, I use Morpheus and it always deletes my files after a crash even if they are backed up. The weird thing is though that sometimes it deletes them and sometimes it doesnt have a problem with resuming them. I am guessing that it is just crappy software programming.

  5. Still works better than Napster/Gnuttella did though.

  6. I agree that Kazaa network is better than dear old Napster. Huge file selection, resuming, multi-segment downloading, the works. The only bad thing I can find is this darned bug/feature I mentioned above. I'm starting to believe it's actually a "feature" after all. Maybe it's a way of stopping people with slow connections (like me) downloading huge files and spending bandwith?
I'm not refering to downloads getting lost after a crash, that's justified to me. When I download say a 700 MB file, and I have tried several, everything goes normal till I get to 190/700 MB. I can close the client, resume after a day or two and the file will resume fine. But past that point bang! If I pause and disconnect and then reconnect without completely closing the client, no problem, it resumes as usual. But if I pause, disconnect and close it and then re-load it... there goes the file! Even without rebooting or anything, just close it and re-load the next moment. Beats me...
So, the only solution I can think of is to keep the PC on and the client loaded all the time for a week or two till I get the file with my lame 56k line. Not feasible...
Oh, and an other thing. Didn't have this problem with v1.0 of Morpheus. After having to upgrade to v1.3.3 (they won't connect you to the network any more with v1.0) it's no more DivXs for me. Sob, sob...

  7. Recently a leading u.k. magazine, reported Morpheus as having a bug in the file resumption process. I guess we'll just have to wait for the next version, or one of you geniuses out there will come up with a solution...

  8. Eventually I got an answer from the Grokster Support Team.
Here is the mail I sent them:

    (...)
I always "Pause" the downloads before exiting the client. I even wait a couple of minutes after pausing before I exit. Still the partial download file disappears when I re-load the client, if it's bigger than 190MB. If I pause, disconnect and reconnect and resume it's OK, but if I exit the client and re-load and connect it's gone. I'm pretty sure this is a bug.
    (...)

    And here's their reply:

    (...)
The software is actually designed to operate this way to avoid partial files, but this is the comment in the forum that looks like it might help:
To prevent this, back up the file periodically. Pause the download, copy the associated kazaadownload3563456354634563.dat to another location then resume the download. If your download gets deleted, copy the backup back, restart Grokster and there it is!
    (...)

So, it looks like "the software is actually designed to operate this way to avoid partial files", eh? Hmmm... It certainly succeeds it this area...

  9. Just out of interest, what speed is your modem (56k??). 700Mb files!! Don't you just love that moment when there's only 5 megs to go. Your computers hot and bothered not having slept for several days, and then someone with a sense of humour as sick as mine cuts you off when you were just "SO CLOSE" p.s. I'm 56k so I share your pain. But lets face it, when the whole world goes broadband, Hollywood will collapse. Whose going to imvest 100 million dollars in the latest fx laden crap, when some spotty kid can have it to own, in less time than it takes to say Napster. Second thoughts, this is actually sounds like a good idea. Pirates unite! Sequels will no longer exist, actors and acresses will have to justify their inflated wages, and only films that have more brains than bucks will succeed. Lets make it happen!

  10. Just a note, those KAZAA files can be opened in vdub, just open and extract all but the last 5mins of d'l, you'd lose the credits, but that's no biggy

I suggest DirectConnect if u have nice connection.

  13. I downloaded MIRC, but want to know the easiest way for a beginner to navigate through the maze of channels (thousands keep appearing)and view individuals files. I'm not finding it user friendly like Morpheus etc. Is this for high speed connections only, or can 56k modems make any proper use of it(music, movies etc).

  14. I used morpheus 1 day. Then I unistalled it and went back to IRC.IRc has everything.I dont know why people use these other crappy programs.Irc isnt hard to navigate.A couple of commands will get you everywhere.DOS commands like dir and dir.thats pratically it.GOD DAMN people are getting to dumb, talkin about "not as user friendly" and shit.

  16. Well I heard here somewhere that u cant post links to that kind of stuff,so just go to a SEARCH ENGINE called Google and ends with a .com then search for IRC (internet relay chat) and just download it on the first search result page or whatever http://www.mIRC.com

BTW,to the people of VCDhelp and stuff, this is a link to a software program.it is not Warez or stuff like that

  17. I dont think anyone cares about you posting a link to a software program as long as it isnt illegal. You just cant post crap like http://www.mywarezcollection.com/illegalsoftware (not real site).

I might be dumb, but your obviously blind. The question was whether the service is worth it on a 56k modem?? As for it being "user friendly", thats purely a matter of opinion; largely based on my two months p.c exposure, versus your fresh air starved, trainspotter like fanatacism. A helpful response might have been to provide a link to a relevant newbie FAQ. But sorry this is obviously beneath your abilities

Try Edonkey, it's way better for those larger files at least. Broadband is a must.

You can download it at http://www.edonkey200.com

Useful info can be found at these sites too:

  22. Cheers for those links!! There's some interesting stuff here, particularly on shareactor.
Coming from the u.k. very few people have broadband yet
With Morpheus I can just resume my download over and over again on 56k. Don't know yet if there are any excellent alternatives where you can do this...

Edonkey also allows you to pause/resume your downloads as well. I think mose Edonkey users probably have broadband though, so the service caters mainly to larger files (Divx, ISO, ect). I have gotten some MP3's but you might have better luck downloading an entire album than finding a particular song.
