Does anyone know what the normal amount of Pl errors and failures are for DVDs? On every DVD I've tested with Nero Disc Quality Test, I always end up with a disc quality of like 70% or below no matter what discs I am using. Is this normal? On CD's I've tested I get very few C1 and C2 errors, but DVD's seem to have a lot of Pl errors.

The DVD's I've tested were all burned on various Pioneer burners (104, 105, 106). I am using a Sony DDU1612 DVD-ROM for testing (supposedly a rebadged Liteon 166). All DVD's are various brands, supposed high quality "made in Japan" stuff. I get no errors on ScanDisc file test or surface test, only using Disc Quality Test.

The test is found in Nero CD-DVD Speed under the "extra" heading. It's called Disc Quality Test, right below ScanDisc.

  4. cdfreaks.com has a lot of forum space talking about PI/PO tests - another product called KProbe also does these tests. You can find a lot of information over there about them, but I can tell you that what I've found is while low PI/PO numbers are good, high ones aren't necessarily "bad" - I normally run the normal Nero disk scan and as long as they're all green - it's normally a keeper.

I've also used a product called DVD Inspector, which shows counts of "soft" and "hard" errors, and as long as soft is below about 2% and hard is 0, it's a "keeper".
    Cheers......

  5. This link specifically talks about PI and PIF errors and has many examples. A very good place to start.
