Will you be copying the video to a CD with menus to play in your car or home stereo system

I don't think so. I had around 2000 posts before I bought an ADVC-100 and started analog capturing. People may have knowledge in some areas but not in other. If I bought a MAC tomorrow, I would be a 2800+ posters with the most noobish questions in the MAC forum.

    anyway...

Dr Gee, the file type is determined by how you are capturing the signal ie. if using a vcr hooked up to an ADVC-100 (like I do), you capture to DV AVI. If you are using a TVTuner card it will more than likely be capturing to MPEG.

How do you plan on hooking your VCR up to your computer ?
    If in doubt, Google it.
