create subtitle from scratch

I've captured some old music videos from vhs tapes to put on dvd.

I authored the dvd with tmpg dvd author and now i'd like to add subtitles (the lyrics) with the excellent guide using ifoedit.

The only problem I have is how to create them from scratch. I've downloaded the lyrics but now wich software can i use to put timestamps.

For lyrics there a lots of easy Winamp plugins but they only set the start time of each line and on sub files there are start and end times for each subtitle.

So which software can I use to create them easyly (like lyrics Winamp plugins which only need to press a key when the lyric starts to put the timestamp).
