  1. I have just built a new machine and it will not play DVDs in any DVD player. Windows Media player simply crashes, and PowerDVD gives the following error:

I have run a search on all forums for this error code, but I got only one result:

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=184734&highlight=f6f00018

The machine has an ATI Radeon card in it, but the person who posted in the link had a GeForce MX card so it isn't ATI-specific. I have tried it in both the DVD drives - a LiteOn and an NEC. Both give the same error.

Has anyone else seen this error, and if so do you know how to solve the problem?

    Thanks,

    Cobra

Error Code: "F6F00018" - This problem is caused because your VGA card can not enable the overlay function. We suggest that you do the following:
    (a) Close all other applications that would use overlay (Like Windows MediaPlayer, Netmeeting, or other DVD players). Since Most display cards support only one overlay, If it is used by other applications, PowerDVD will not be able to access it.
    (b) Install the latest DirectX. If you did not know where to download DirectX, then you can visit the Microsoft Web site to download. (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx?url=/windows/directx/downloads/default.htm). Some display drivers require the latest DirectX to work.
    (c) Please ensure you have the latest drivers installed for your video adapter.
    (d) Please lower your screen resolution, color depth, and refresh rate. If this still does not work, we suggest that you try to upgrade your VGA card.

I myself would guess your directx is fubar, try testing your directx.Second guess would be your video drivers.

  3. johns0,

Thanks for the reply. We tried everything to get it to work, but had no success. We also noticed that it made a mess of the DVD video - it was washed-out with horizontal lines of brightness running across the image at regular intervals (every few pixels).

We swapped it for my GeForce4 Ti4600 and the machine now plays DVDs perfectly.

Unfortunately, we will have to return the ATI card since nothing would persuade it to work properly.

    Thanks again,

    Cobra
