    My DVD-ROM, that came in a sony rx-450 is somewhat malfunctioning. The DVD-ROM was able to play anything, a cou ple months ago. Now all it plays is normal Cd's and a select few dvds? What is the problem? THis is the "data" that i collected.

    Sony DVD-ROM

    (all dvds play fine in standalone dvd
    and are all ntsc region 1 unless stated.)

    Played

    Dragonball Z dvd - Region 1,2,4 )bought in USA store.
    Comp-USA DVD-R 4.7 GB - with video on it
    Any normal cd. (blank, cd-rom, music cd,vcd whatever)

    DID NOT play

    blockbuster rented big fish
    i-spy
    spiderman
    hulk
    star wars II
    stuck on you
    the bourne identity
    X2

    it seems like the dvd rom will NOW only play non-official dvds. (all the dvds listed above are official release movies, exept that one comp usa dvd with home footage on it.)

    anybody have any suggestions?

    I suggest updating the firmware for the drive. It actually sounds to me like you have a hardware or driver problem, but the firmware is a good place to start.

    Go to the manufacturers website.

    Look in the downloads section

    There might be a firmware driver update for your drive.

    Firmware is "like" a software (and I use this term very loosely) for an IC chip. It can be flashed for an update, but needs to be done properly, or the devices can become an expensive paperweight. because it's a permanent change (I think of FIRM as in solid) it's FIRMware. That's the best description I can give you, though someone might have a better or more accurate way of explaining it.

    OK, i got an updated firmware but, i need to acsess a MS DOS in win xp pro. is there any other msdos then comand prompt in acsessories in start menu?

    BEcause: The instructions iunstruct me to

    ""Firmware update command
    Type the following and press the ENTER key at the end:

    UPG5A /n G6TAxxx.HEX

    -/n will vary depending on which IDE bus the target DVD-ROM drive is
    configured for. Type one of the following, depending on which IDE bus
    (Primary/Secondary) and setting(Master/Slave)the target DVD-ROM drive
    is configured:
    n=1: Primary Slave
    n=2: Secondary Master
    n=3: Secondary Slave""

    And when i do that i get errors, so i thought it might be somthing else then command prompt.

    Once again thanks for the help!

    EDIT: just in case, my dvd is a pioneer dvd-116R

  10. I'm not a big fan of firmware update unless you have a specific reason for doing so. In your case I wouldn't. I wouldjust try cleaning it
