Wide Screen Formats

I downloaded a movie, (Spiderman 2), and the heading didn't say anything about it being in Widescreen format. But after I burned it on a CD-R and played it in my DVD player, it was in widescreen format.
My question is, is there any software that can either let you know or deal with this problem. I can't stand widescreen.
