  1. Hey all need alittle of advise. I will be building a system that will only be used for working with my DVD's. I'll be doing some video editing, backing up my DVD's, and backing up my VCR and 8mm tapes.

I was thinking of the following platforms

    Intel P4 3.0c to 3.2c
    AMD Athlon 2600 or Higher
    AMD 64 3000 or higher

    Which chip would work best.

  2. They will all work. Some just faster than others.

Personally I would stick with the AMD's, but that is just me. The 64 will do it faster, but cost more. However it may be worth your while to look at the 64 for when HiDef editing/playback on the computer becomes common it will give more headroom.

Also, try searching. This question gets asked every week.

Suntan is right any of them would work but in general if you look at benchmarking the Intel chips get better numbers in encoding. IMHO you probably wouldn't notice too much difference in real world. Make sure you have plenty of RAM (1GB recommend) and you should be set. Also a hardware encoding video card would help also. Like the Happauges.

    Good luck

  4. Not to contradict, but I have only 512mb, and I have never ran out of memory.

The P4 has a slight edge with video, the AMD a slight edge with gaming. Either would work nicely though
