  3. .tar files are usually UNIX Tape ARchive files. You will need to untar it to extract the files that it holds:

    cat Blah.tar | tar xfv -

will work. Usually, the file is compressed so I do:

    zcat Blah.tar.Z | tar xfv -

    Good luck.

  5. what is point in rar files?
they are same size after decompression as before.
if i get a big rar file i unrar it it goes into 2 folders full of more rar files then i unrar again to make final file. why does'nt it unrar to 2 final files straight away?
why when downloading do'nt they make them all avi's?
is it to do with most stuff coming from new's groups initially? which can't send files bigger than email size?
    just curious.
probably not making sense but that's nothing new
