    some people are just stupid.....
Do your math again, you can put 7.28hrs of VCD on 1 DVD-+r media.

    but yes it is pointless
The point is, that you want to put tv shows on them! If I have a season of shows, I can fit an entire season and still have room on 2 DVDs! Quality is Great for what it is! Plus its way easier! Some people do not have the money to buy dvds all year long. DVD media is not the cheapest, and I can eaither put 4 episodes on it, or 16... Hmm... let me think...
    the buy cd's....much cheaper....

best quality vs. quantity to still get dvdish quality would be to compile a dvd project that is about 6-6.5gig in size (video_ts folder), then use 2pass or advanced analysis options with transcoders like dvdshrink or nero recode to "fit to disc" and burn all in one step. you can use these programs with fantastic results down to around 55-60% if needed. much easier and faster this way then re-encoding each mpg file before authoring/compliling. most dvd authoring programs allow you to compile up to a dvd9 size/9gigish project since they are already updated to allow for dual layer burners/blanks. then just transcode output to fit on dvd5! if you need even more quality than 45-50% gives with a transcoder, then just "shrink" by using dvd rebuilder (free), since it will actually re-encode each vob using CCE...perfect one click solution in this scenario...just takes awhile vs. transcoder, of course.

  4. Set the video bitrate of the file to 1800

Sorry, let me correct myself. To have 12 42 minute episodes on 1 dvd the bitrate has to be set to 900 not 1800. Sorry.

  5. Set the video bitrate of the file to 1800. That is what I used and it allows you to get 12 42 minute episodes on a disk.
Sorry, its supposed to be 900 for the bitrate for 12 42 minute episodes on 1 dvd.
