  1. I've never been one to mess much with the insides of my PC except when installing something, or taking something out. NOW...its kinda peeked my interest. BUT...my image of overclocking was fiddling with the actual hardware, moding it in some way or something like that...but when I read about it, everyone is using a program of some sort to over-clock. Is this how it's done!! Just with an app...??

Has anyone over-clocked their video card and fried it!? Do you add extra cooling...??

I actually asked pretty much the same thing on another message board. :P The did tell me to use extra cooling, and one guy did fry his.

  3. Your CPU is gonna burn very hot ... don't do it unless you plan on buying a few more fans

I have overclocked my CPU and my videocard. I dont do it all the time just sometimes to mess around and see how far I can push it. You will definately want more cooling if you plan on overclocking for very long. you can overclock CPU by tweaking your bios changing the FSB or Multiplier settings. Video cards can be overclocked using software to change the Core (chip) speed and the Memory speed. I pushed my Athlon 1800 (1.5ghz) to speeds of a 2400 with no problems and I pushed my video card enough to gain about 700 points in 3dmark2001 benchmark tests. I did it for pure fun and testing, but I dont feel the need to do it all the time to gain speed.

  5. OK...so lets say I wanna overclock my video card and CPU...how would I figure out how much is enough to keep things cool. Also, what apps are people using!?

Here is a utility to overclock ATI cards
    http://atitool.ocfaq.com/

To overclock your CPU, you can go into your bios settings. you may only be able to do a FSB overclock, where you will just slowly increase your FSB speed and then test your computers stability.

To watch your tempatures get motherboard monitor 5. it will tell you the cpu temp and fan speeds.

I have 3 case fans and a stock heatsink/fan on my athlon CPU. IF you looking at running your CPU overclocked all the time you may want to get a nice thermaltake heatsink/fan combo.

    I used to overclock Celerons

    300 to 416
    366 to 550
    800 to 1200
    1000 to 1300

Use a high capacity CPU fan and leave the side off the computer.
They ran rock solid and never exceeded 50C,never used additional fans.

Just as an FYI in the past overclocking a CPU could entail physically altering the chip but more and more motherboards allow you to manipulate without that being a neccessity anymore...

  10. Take a look at the link in my signature to find out how to overclock your CPU. Just take it easy with it and you should be fine. My AMD Athlon used to run at 1.83GHz and it is now 2.31GHz. It peaks at a temperature of 58 deg C which is fine.

Feel free to PM me or add me to MSN Messenger if you would like me to tell you how I overclock my machines.

As Will Hay once said: "What is this overclocking shite... A secret club?".
