  1. On this mac. The computer won't read wmv files or avi so I need to find a mac program that can convert avi or wmv to mpg so I can watch what I downloaded. Is there any program like that?

    mencoder based apps can handle that
    for the .wma give ffmpegx a try
    you could also do that for .avi but you may have an easier time with mpeg2works for the .avi


    will they play in MplayerOSX?

    ffmpegX seems to transcode .wmv minus the audio.

    For avi files I use Quicktime Pro. I've dl codecs for QT that allow me to view almost all types of avi files; however the audio is typically mp3 so I use another program for the audio. FFmpegX does the trick with the audio, but typically fails with the video.

    There is another program currently in alpha stages that handles both perfectly, but I think that the software maker is sitting on it for a little while.
