  2. VCD can never approach the quality of DVD.

The idea of VCD is to use a MUCH lower video bit rate so that an hour of video can fit on a single CD.

With higher-rate DVD video, only about 9 minutes will fit on a CD.

  3. Try an xVCD at 480x480, 2pass VBR (min=500, max=2520, ave=1400~2200), motion search=high.

  6. I find that on a computer monitor, the difference betweeen DVD and VCD is obvious. But when you play on a TV via a Hollywood + card there really isn't much difference. In fact, when I encoded with TMPG I challenged my girlfriend to notice a difference...she couldn't...

  8. It also depends on what you want VCDs for....I like a quick easy way to back up DVDs and play them on lower end systems without a headache....ie...I can play them on my non-dvd crappy laptop. But, honestly, I believe the quality is AT LEAST equivalent to commercial VHS. So unless you are so picky that you hurl that new VHS out the window in disgust...I think you should be fine...

What effort? Smart Ripper-> DVDx -> Ulead Movie Factory = SVCD which is hard to tell from DVD on TV.
