I may be off base here but I think this will work...
Transfer 8mm analog or digital tape to disk using firewire and Adobe Premiere or whatever..
Play the digital avi into my Tivo through composite video/audio output.
Voila! I have acceptable quality mpeg movies playable on my television and did it real time, not seven hours on an asskickin, (in other respects), athlon 1400 with 768mb ddr.
With a network card on my tivo, I could bring the movies back to my network computer and probably I can cut out the middleman and play my camcorder directly into the tivo if I don't want to edit the file.
Where am I wrong here, if I am wrong?
