    Hello,
I've read some posts over time on this site regarding frameserving from VirtualDub to TMPGEnc, Is this a better method than simply importing your AVI files into TMPGEnc at whatever resolution they are in and selecting your final resolution with your TMPGEnc templates, and does doing it from VirtualDub save encoding time ? I'm satisfied with doing it the "old" way but also eager to learn any new tricks.

    Any Takers??

    Thanks, GMaq

With Virtualdub you can apply filtering and do some editting. Frameserving allows you to pass the video direct to TMPGEnc without saving to an intermediate file. By doing so you can avoid a re-compression step or avoid having to save a very large uncompressed file. So if you need to do some processing with Virtualdub then frameserving can be the way to go.

I just used Vdub to frameserve an mpeg1 file to TMPGEnc. The file had errors in it that prevented me from authoring and burning it as a VCD. Vdub allowed the bad frames to be re-encoded by TMPGEnc without losing A/V sync. For me it worked like a charm, but I wouldn't recommend it for most files unless you are having a problem.

Thanks a lot for your obviously educated reply, Now I get it, no intermediate saving of your edited AVI, I'll have to give it a try for fun.
I usually do a direct stream copy after I've finished editing but this could save that step as well. Thanks again for your help. GMaq

After you get the hang of that if you like it you should check out AviSynth.
