  1. I have a wide screen Xvid I want to convert to SVCD, is there a way to keep the wide screen format, a certain aspect ration I should be selecting with TMPGenc?? Thank you.

  4. hmm, full screen (keep ar) never works for me. it usually causes the video to go outside the tv area.

what i like to do is use the center (custom size) and manually enter the size of the source. ***

    ***depending on the source size.

It's supposed to. That's the way TV works. Of course you can recode with borders if you don't like it...

  6. sorry, but that's not how it's supposed to work.

I don't know about you but I like watching the video in its entirety, not 3/4 of it. If done properly, the viewable area will not be cut off, and without borders.

Of course it's up to you if you want to sacrifice spacial resolution over the entire picture so you can see the very edges on your TV. But TMPEGENC is doing exactly what is supposed to do when you select it's "full screen keep aspect ratio" setting.

  8. not saying it's not doing what it's supposed to do. tmpgenc will encode it the way you ask it to, but that doesn't mean it's the correct way or how it's supposed to be done. I prefer not to do it this way

I encode a lot of anime, and if you encode using full screen (keep ar), the subtitles go below the screen and/or they will be cut off on the left/right sides. I prefer to see the entire subtitle and not just part of them. /shrug. to each their own.

The real prolem is that a lot of fansubbed anime is improperly subtitled. For display on TV the subtitles are supposed to stay within the "safe area" so that they don't run off-screen. If you could buy those same shows on VHS tape or DVD you would find that the picture fully overscans and the subtitles are within the safe area.
