By the way, i've tried the things in the how to.
and it's Virtual Dub 1.4.7 -
You have to enter the "Play control" menu and change the recording input. You can get there by double-clicking the little yellow speaker in the bottom line menu in Windows.

I too am having problems in Win XP, capturing the sound.
Have noticed that the Audio Driver for my Hauppauge WinTV PCI card says theres a problem with this device, but I hear sound when just played through TV2000, or any other capturing program.
I've tried enabling Line in, in all places.
Q. Is this Audio Driver working correctly if I can hear it
Q. is this Driver required just to sent Audio to the Soundcard
Q. Are there any other WDM drivers that will work other than the Hauppauge ones

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound and video card as this is likely the problem, if they are the latest you may want to reinstall them. I use XP with a sb live 5.1 and Ati AIW card and it all works fine, try recoding using the line in on your sound card and your sound recorder software, if that works then it must be your video card driver.
