HOW MUCH VIDEO MEMORY DO I NEED??

Looking at buying a new system and I was curious how much video memory I need.I'm only going to be using it to do video editing and I'm not really sure what the minimum should be or could be??
Any input is appreciated.

Do you mean video card memory? Or computer memory? For video cards 128Mb is good. Doesn't matter much for video cards, they are mostly for display, not editing.

For computer system memory for video work, I would recommend 512Mb minimum, preferably DDR 3200 or better.

Memory is only part of the system. Processor type; Motherboard type and brand; Bus speed; HD size, number of drives, and type of interface; Programs used, are also important.

That depends on if you are planning to play games with lots of textures and the like. I don't think video editing requires that much video card memory unless you are really doing something special.

I'm not using it for games at all.The one I was looking at had 64MB (shared) video memory.
It's going to be used for building dvd's with menu's and such.
No games.The rest of the system looks good but I wasn't sure if that was enough in that area??

Onboard graphics are usually good enough for video. It's when you get into 3D stuff that having a good video card is helpful. A 64MB card should be fine.

I currently use SiS 730 onboard video with 64 MB shared from system RAM. I don't think I would need much more for building DVDs, encoding, ripping etc. Those are all more CPU demanding than video. I think my system does fine and would do even better if I had a faster processer. In fact, my onboard video can even play 3D games a little bit. I can play Shogo at 800x600 with high detail pretty well. Too bad the game is from 1998. MDK2 played surprisingly well and smooth at 1024x768. I also could play Return to Castle Wolfenstein at low detail setting. Oh yeah, and Doom3 at 1280x1024.

For what you described, yes.

For what you described, yes.

You can really use the mobo built in video with shared memory and it will work fine for video editing. But gaming, cad work, any video intensive apps will choke with built in vid.
