I'm getting a new computer and I was wondering in general, which codecs I need to download to watch movies when I download them off the net.
On this computer, I just use the K-Lite codec pack, but it isn't the best. Some movies show up blocky sometimes, I'm not sure if its the actual file that I downloaded or the codecs.
So, what are the names of the codecs that I need for playing movies (divx, avi, etc.) without any problems?

Hello,
Divx 5.2 (I think that's the newest version). You can get that from this site or www.divx.com. (Xvid). And there are a lot of others for avi in general.
Don't forget your dvd software will install your mpeg2 codecs so you should be ok there.
This is a good list of codecs:

Hope this helps.

I was hoping that someone wouldnt gimme that 'list'
. So which ones out of that list do I have to download, cause I kno there's incompatibility issues if I download them all.
What if I don't use DVD software?, I just use Windows Media Player. Which mpeg2 codecs do I need? -
I don't install codec packs, they can f'up your system, more than help it. This is generally the result of conflicts between codecs. I only have installed, Real Alternative, Quicktime Alternative, WMV9 VCM, xvid, and some audio codecs and that's all. I have been able to play any video that has come along. Some people may choose ffdshow instead of xvid. But try to keep the number of codecs on your system to the bare minimum.

Hello,
lazyturbo-I was hoping that someone wouldnt gimme that 'list'
I personally like powerdvd. I used to use windvd but switched when I got my new burner. It's pretty good (I use version 4).
