I've heard people mention here that they don't have A/C in their house or apartment. I was curious just how many do, and for those who don't, how do you stay cool?

Our Australian friends will need to draw on memory cells here since they're not currently worried about staying cool

We had evaporative A/C in our house until 2002 when I had a refrigerated unit installed. The house has central AC/heating with ducts in every room.

Edit: Because of the heat here in the summer, the standard size A/C for our house is 4 tons (48,000 BTU). That's for a 2100 square foot 2-storey house with lots of windows.

Refrigerated. If the house didn't have it, I installed it. There were times in Texas when it got used in January and February!

  3. I live in Pennsylvania, outside of Philadelphia. Here in August it can get a tad uncomfortable.. humidity that is...

Since my home is 80 years old central air was never put in. (and will be tough add-on in the coming years) so we have 6 window units cranking during the day (about 3 1/2 tons of air) ... the rooms are quite comfortable. And the utility company is very happy with me.

Very noisy ceiling fan. I am always worried that it will fall and decapitate me because it is so wobbly.

I wanted to put more than one answer since I use AC and ceiling fans combined to keep cool but oh well.

73 degrees here. I like the house nice and cool at night when I'm trying to sleep.

Rarely a problem here. It usually dips into the low 60's at night. A few well-placed window fans do the trick...

If you don't mind the occasional skunk, that is.

100+ year old house, no central a/c. we have a window a/c in the bedroom, and several fans throughout the house.

Evap when the humidity is low
A/C when the humidity is high
    Natural when the weather permits
    I always use ceiling fans
I have a floor fan next to my computer

So for me, it would be all but the sweating method

Average day in Summer would be about 30-35 degrees celcius (85-95 F) however if it was like last Summer the average will be about 38-45 degrees celcius (100-113 F).

We also have quite high humidity levels here.

Ok, with all this talk about AC, now I'm mad!

    <** begin rant **>

It is really not that hot here. The last few weeks, the average high has been low 90's. Whenever the wife uses the car, she cranks the AC all the way up! Of course, the mileage then drops through the asphalt! She never stops for gas, she always waits for me to do it. Now while gas prices have dropped a bit (we actually have one station in town below the $2.00/gal mark), with a 26 gallon tank, it's just not cheap to keep filling this beast up! I can understand if the baby is in the car, just she does this if she's alone too!

Roll down the f'ing window, bitch! The car is moving. There's plenty of airflow.

    <** end rant **>

    Sorry.

Try paying $5.85 a gallon and $302 annual road tax and you'll soon learn to be happy with what you have.
Your tank would cost me $152 to fill compared to less then $52 you have to pay!
