  1. I recently purchased a dvd/cd-rw drive and installed it into the selectable bay of a Toshiba Tecra 8100, running windows 98. On startup I get an IDE ERROR 1 and the drive doesn't show up. If I remove and then reinsert the drive with the computer running the drive shows up and appears to run fine. When I restart the computer it's gone again.

When the drive is available it shows up under Device Manager as Driver: HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4241N; under Settings I have Firmware Rev: OH33 and Target ID 1; under options the "Disconnect" and "Auto Insert Notify" boxes are checked. I tried unchecking the "Disconnect" box but get the same result.

I tried running Install New Hardware from the Control Panel but no new devices are found.

Any suggestions on getting the drive to show up on startup without having to unplug and reinsert it would be greatly appreciated.

Does it show up in BIOS when booting? If not, you may need to set it to auto-detect, this is a BIOS option (press DEL when starting up the PC to get into your BIOS screen). I don't know what the "selectable bay" uses for protocol, is it IDE? It's not a USB or Firewire drive, is it? In any case, you should be able to see it if you check your BIOS, if not, there is something else going on.
