  1. i just converted a avi to mpg using gary's guide and got a 758mb file. i figured i'd go ahead and try overburning it.

when i opened up nero, i selected svcd from the wizard, then i dragged and dropped my 758mb .mpg into the burning section. when i did that, it automatically reduced the size to 640-somethingmb.

i was just wondering why? i've searched all through forums and guides here and throughout the internet but i haven't found anything about this. it's not that it's a problem, i just want an understanding of what happened.

Pretty simple..........VCD's and SVCD's use MODE2 for burning (MODE2 throws away some error protection on the final CD) allowing upto around 810mb onto a standard 700mb (80min) CD.

Or look at a another way an 80 minute CD can hold upto an 80min VCD or approx a 45min SVCD.......BUT ONLY WHEN BURNT AS A VCD or SVCD ......in DATA mode they will hold less (cos its MODE1)....ONLY 700MB.

Your not even overburning. As I said above up to ~810mb will fit on a normal 700mb (80 min) CD when burnt in MODE2 (as VCD's and SVCD's are).
