i have divx file that is dvdready. I burned it using the software that came with my writer (sonic mydvd). Everything turns out fine exept that the subtitles run off the screen at the bottom corners. In the middle parts of it run off but still readable. But the corners are really bad.

My tv is not a flatscreen, its like the picture is still a perfect square and my tv has rounded corners. I thought the picture would adjust to fit perfectly on the screen like how proffessional subtitles do. How come these run off screen?

Its happened the same way when i put my avi's w/ subs on vcd. same exact problem. Does anyone know a solution to this. Ive had this problem for months.

Did you add the subtitles yourself, or are they embedded in the video?

You can add a border with AviSynth, but it has a slow learning curve.

what do you mean a border? around the whole video? wouldnt that change the dimensions of the video and in turn make it not work? or will the video be shrunk down to fit the border and still be at resolution?

So is moving the subs around anyway possible?

Adding a border seems to be the only waysince the subtitles are embedded, that is, part of the video itself. Adding a border will shrink the screen, but just enough to keep the subtitles on your screen. The video should still work afterwards.

Isn't the video just suffering from overscan?

so would i do a border around the whole screen? or just the bottom. ok the avi is 640 x 480. with the border it would still be that size right? Is there any online tutorials to adding a border?

so what about that thing where the picture should curve to fit my tv perfectly?

Read up on AviSynth. It may look a little difficult, but it can solve your borders problem with AddBorders.

Load the avi in tmpgenc and choose the template you want for encoding, then go to setting/advanced/clip frame/arrange setting and choose center(custom size) and adjust so you get a border of around 16 pixels.

Do exactly what johns0 wrote. try the size 640x450. the subs should fit perfectly.

Not exactly correct. You can get into the adjustment menu of your TV and change the Vertical Height/ Position/ Linearity. I had to do this on my JVC TV because it came from the factory with about 15% overscan.

I just tweaked it so there is only less than 5% over on the top and bottom, and nothing ever runs off the bottom of the screen.

Although sometimes being so far off was good, it eliminated that damn news crawl on CNN and Foxnews channels. There should be some option to change the overscan % with the remote so we could knock the newscrawl off easier.

You may have to do some looking to find how to get into the adjustment menu of your TV, most modern TV's are done with the remote control, while older TV's used Pots (variable resistors, potentiometers) to make the adustments on the main board inside the TV. I just did a Google search and found a similar model # to my TV and found out all I had to do to get into the adjustment menu was press "Display" and "Video Status" at the same time on the remote. That allows me to access about 40 different settings that are normally hidden (it's a "service menu").

Your TV may have the same option.

hey thanks john.. but there is still one concern:

ok my original file was 640x480. when i used it w/ MyDvd, it converted to 720x480 or at least i think it did, because i had to save the project and i saw something sayin 720x480.

let me get this straight, can dvd's be burned as 640x480? i would assume so because i know vcd(352x240) can be on dvd as long as audio is 48hz.

Nope, 640x480 is not a valid DVD resolution. However, 352x240 is, that's why a VCD mpeg is so easy to author as DVD.

after further inspection. i played my dvd i made in powerdvd, i didnt adjust the screen, and i am lead to believe it did stay 640x480 b/c i measured it onscreen, and i know that 72pixels = 1 inch and the picture was lil longer than 8 inches which is 640pixels

That might be so, but 640x480 is still no DVD resolution. That some DVD player software (and possibly even some stand alone players) accept non standard discs is another issue!

when you are at the settings/video in TMPGE. Your resolution should be at 720x480. That is dvd resolution. and adjust the custom size to 640x450. try it and tell all of us how it came out. you can check out the dvd specs on the left side.
