  1. I previously posted regarding problems with backing up a dvd...now, I think I know for sure that my problem lies when I am doing the actually ripping of the dvd, using dvd shrink or whatever program. I have tried dvd shrink and dvd decrypter to no avail.

I am almost positive it isn't my burner, because I have gotten other dvd files (.img) and burned them successfully using dvd decrypter.

I just cannot burn something that I rip myself, I always get a communication error. I have tried burning with nero, and dvd decrypter.

In conclusion, I am assuming I am getting a problem when I rip/encode.

Please, can someone help me in this matter? Thanks.

  2. What does the error say exactly? Are you using the computer while you are burning or ripping? What are the specs of your machine? The more info you give, the easier it will be for someone to help you.

No, I do not use the machine while I am ripping or burning.

    My specs are as follows:
    120 gig hd
    P4 2.6 ghz
    512 DDR SDRAM
HP DVD writer 300c (this was the burner that came with the computer already installed)

    Here is the error:

    #26 CDR -1024 File Writer.cpp, Line 335
    Communication failure

    Also, I used Nero v 6.0.0.19

Try upgrading your Nero. This is NOT a ripping problem, it IS a burning problem.

  5. Are you sure it is a burning problem? Because I have tried burning with nero and dvd decrypter, both failing. Is there an upgrade available for my version? Also, I have heard that nero 5.xx (something) is a way better version, can anyone confirm, and if so, is there a place where I can still download the demo for that version (nero's site only has demo for current version), thanks all!

  6. Someone posted in your last thread that you should check to see if DMA is enabled on your burner. This would be my first guess. Is it?

Tried that as well and it still didn't work, I am not sure why this is happening, I also upgraded my nero to the latest version. What is the matter?

What error does DVD Decrypter produce? Don't tell us that it's some .cpp error, that would be bogus.

  9. This is a cut-and-paste from Nero's website FAQ. If your computer is out of warranty, I'd crack it open and see if the drives were jumpered as cable select.

    11. I got the 'Communication Error' message during the write process. Why?

This can be caused by the following:

    1) Old IDE Controller Drivers - This is the most common cause of this error message. You must have the latest drivers for your IDE controller card to prevent this error message. (Same applies to SCSI Cards) Go to the website of the manufacturer of your Controller card and obtain the latest drivers. Such as Intel, VIA, SIS, etc.

    2) DMA Settings - You may have DMA disabled for your CDROM/DVDROM and Recorder devices. You should enable this feature. If you have old drivers, and even if you have the latest in some cases, DMA may not be properly supported even though you can enable it. So you should try with DMA disabled if having it Enabled still causes problems.

    Enable or Disable DMA:

To enable DMA in Windows 2000/XP, simply go to your 'Control Panel', and go to 'Systems>Hardware>Device Manager'.

Double click on the 'IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers'. Right click on the 'Primary IDE Channel' and go to 'Properties>Advanced Settings'
and change Transfer Mode to 'DMA if available'. Do the same for the Secondary IDE Channel

For Windows 9x and ME, go to your 'Control Panel->System->Device Manager->CDROM' and under the devices 'Properties->Settings' enable or disable DMA here.

    3) Driver Conflicts - You may have or had other CD Recording software installed on your system, and their drivers can cause conflicts with our software when trying to communicate to the Recorder. Please remove any other Recording programs you may have on your system, and be sure all their drivers are removed as well.

    4) Poor IDE cables - In many cases, with the Recorders supporting UDMA, you must use 80pin IDE cables. Using the 40pin IDE cables work with the Recorder, but when it comes to the actual recording process, there can be problems. Or you may just have an IDE cable that is in poor condition and you need to replace it, or try a different connector on that IDE Cable as the connector could be the cause.

    5) CSEL - If your devices are jumpered with CSEL, your controller could be having trouble with this setting. It's best to change it so that you have your devices jumpered as Master or Slave. Refer to the Manual on your CDROM, DVDROM and Recorder devices for how to do this.

  10. Do you think the drivers with Easy CD Creator are conflicting with the ones of Nero? Do you know of any burning program out there that has drivers that conflict with nero's? Thanks.

  11. Thank you all for your help, I have solved my problem and successfully burned a dvd backup with nero! After reading all your suggestions, and reading nero's faq posted by bartstop, #3 on the faq stuck out, and I uninstalled a few of my other burning programs, and tried again and it worked, so there was most likely a driver conflict! Thanks again for all your help, you guys are great, and I will be back if I have any more troubles!!
