I have several movies in AVI format and they are DIVX...the
Quality is very nice...When I play them on the computer they are in Wide Screen Format (The whole screen is not filled with the video)...and that is fine, because the quality is excellent....however...when I convert the AVI to a VCD to watch the AVI video on my DVD player...the Encoding Process takes the Wide Screen Video and stretches the video and makes the video on the DVD player...look like
crap...very unwatchable...So my question to anyone, is how do I convert the AVI file to a VCD file while maintaining the Original Screen Size? I have tried several Encoders...but no luck? HELP..thanks

  2. ok you are encoding to vcd, not really good since vcd sucks with bad quality.

If i were u, either encode to multiple cds with svcd standard, or if you only want 1 cd(like me), encode to xsvcd with AWESOME quality.
    Now on to your answer-
When you choose mpeg=2 stream and mpeg-2 program VBR, for your video tab res settings- you have a few choices.
    1- 352x240
2-480x480 (ultra damn widescreen, too much for me)
    3-704x480

In my opinion, i always use 352x240 then do something different to keep it widescreen

While still in video tab, choose 4:3 display then go to advanced tab
in filter section, double click clip frame.

In there, choose full screen, keep aspect ratio. If it looks awesome now, then just hit ok and set whatever else and encode like that. If it is not ok, do this-
In clip frame, choose center(custom size)
Manually adjust the inside res the way u want it.
REMEMBER- YOU WILL NEED A SMALL BLACK BORDER AROUND THE WHOLE MOVIE. If you don't, part of the movie will be cut off

  4. sean madison, your reply is not justfied, he is using DivX as source, encoding to XVCD or X anything will produce a much worse quality then VCD when using low quality source, all his question was how to fix the Wide Screen issue.

jeriksen, when you encode using TMPGEnc, go to the Settings and Advanced, and set the following to retain the Wide Screen format so the picture will not be stretched:

Source aspect ratio = 16:9 Display
Video arrange method= Full screen (keep aspect ratio 2)
