  1. OK,

this is a stupid question: I just bought my first 99cent song from Itunes. So how can I convert it to mp3 so that i can play it in other stand alone players.

Sorry i know this is a VIDEO forum ......

You have to first burn it to an audio CD (using iTunes) and then import the track back from the CD into iTunes as mp3.

There is the FREE way and the PAY way.
    Both have their merits.

The FREE way is to go into iTunes, under Preferences,
select the "burning" tab, click on MP3 CD.
Select the "Import" tab in Preferences.
    Change to MP3, 160KBS.
Close out preferences, put a CD in the drive,
make a playlist with your song, and then burn it to CD.
Once done, the CD will mount on the desktop.
Create a new playlist in iTunes, call it "My Mp3's".
With the CD mounted in iTunes, open the CD up
and drag the tracks you want to your "my Mp3s" playlist.
    Tadaaa, you now have mp3s.

The Pay way, much simpler, is to use Quicktime Pro to open and play
the bought track, export out as 48khz AIFF, then open in Amadeus II
and convert to 160kbps MP3. No wasted media, no reimporting, etc.

another pay way would be to get an iPod and hook that up to your stereo, or get a new BMW and just hook your iPod to that and drive and play at the same time

    but there's always a way

I like the BMW option best.

Here's another: Drag the ITMS tracks to Toast 6.0.7's audio tab and choose Save as Disc Image. Then mount the disc image and drag the tracks back to iTunes. I tried it and it even showed the artist/album/title info.

  6. There is yet another way if you have an ipod or access to a PC. I haven't tried it, but this can strip Apple's FairPlay DRM from the song, then you are allowed to export it to mp3 right in iTunes.

    http://hymn-project.org/

Of course, follow your own conscious and push your own luck with this method. It may or may not come back to bite you since few companies respect your fair use rights these days.

  7. Hello!!

    Thanks for the responses!

ok here is the problem. I like the Frobozz option but my burner pio107 doesnt play well with 10.2 and itunes! damn!

So, Frobozz i tried your other option
"Here's another: Drag the ITMS tracks to Toast 6.0.7's audio tab and choose Save as Disc Image. Then mount the disc image and drag the tracks back to iTunes. I tried it and it even showed the artist/album/title info."

but it just doesnt seem to work for me (must be doing something wrong) I drag the purchased song over to Toast 6 in the audio click and then save as disc image. i get a My CD.sd2f file on desk top. I drag to disc copy and get a error of "Unable to open Mt CD.sd2f"

damn what am i doing wrong????

to the best of my knowledge you cant mount those images, they can be burned by double clicking on them and the resulting file opening in toast for burning.

that is obviously not the best way to do it
just burn it to a cdrw and you can then import and erase the cdrw, or do the quicktime method [easiest]

    enjoy

Wait wait wait. Its easier than you think.

Click on the song that you want to convert to MP3 then go up to I think it is the advance menu (sorry I am at work and I have to use one of these non macs so I can't give you the exact process.) there is an option to convert. You can convert it to lots of different file types and I think you have to go to preferences to set what files should be converted to. I convert files I record off the radio to MP3 all the time using this method. I do it so I can bring all the files to work on one CD. It takes a few seconds. Once it is converted do whatever you want with it.

I actually got to contribute to the forum this time. I have graduated!

So I go off to play a little golf while thinking that this issues was all settled.

You mount the Disc Image saved by Toast's Audio tab by clicking on Toast Copy tab, selecting Disk Image and clicking the Select and Mount buttons. Easier still is to use the Mount Disc Image command in the Toast Utilities menu.

iTunes doesn't allow changing the format of iTunes Music Store tracks. They can't be directly converted to mp3. You have to do the dance with creating an AIFF file first, but iTunes only allows that by burning an audio CD. Toast also doesn't create AIFF files without burning an audio CD unless you choose the Save as Disc Image route. When the Toast disc image is mounted, iTunes is fooled into believing the track is an AIFF file from an audio CD.

Hello -- DONT GO BACK TO GOLF JUST YET!!!!!

OK, i got toast to mount a image (AUDIO CD) on my desk top. Problem is that it plays ( the .aiff inside is the right length ) but there is no sound!!! ---- ahhh just silence....
in other words toast could not decode it!

Its too bad that someone doesnt come up with a little program that when you press the burn button in itunes there is a menu to save as a disc image without actually burning!!

Did you download the Toast 6.0.7 updater that was posted on Roxio's Web site yesterday? It is the only version of Toast that works with the iTunes Music Store downloads.

  15. I have another method that ties this into video and you don't spend money on a cd-r. Open up iMovie and create an empty project. Select the Audio tab and make sure your iTunes library is selected under the pulldown menu. Drag the song into the timeline. Now under the File menu select File>Share and select Quicktime. Click on the "Compress Movie For" menu and use Expert Settings. Click Share and use the Sound to AIFF setting. Convert your new AIFF to MP3 using iTunes or whatever encoder you want. You need iLife to do this but it saves the burn step.

    AAAH...MY HEAD HURTS!
    MAKE IT STOP!!!!

My method of using Quicktime Pro to convert Purchased Music to AIFF,
and then either using Amadeus II to convert to MP3,
or here's an even save a step addition:

Take the AIFF made by QT PRO 6, and import it back into iTunes,
and then use Duderino's step to convert to MP3.

is still by far the EASIEST mentioned ( thanks, Galactica!).
Yeesh, all this for a little music...?

Either of my suggestions, You STILL have to buy QT Pro, but then, if you
haven't bought it, what are you doing on the Videohelp forum...?

  20. When you look at the audio waveforms what does it show (Make sure that iMovie>Preferrences>Show Audio Track Waveforms is checked) Is the audio track enabled? (look at the little blue checkbox next to the timeline) Is your audio set to internal audio playback or is it being sent to your
camera? Can you hear any non rights protected songs if you drag them into the timeline?

You could do a search for playfair to strip the DRM.

Or bite the bullet and burn a playlist of your rights protected songs directly from iTunes.

No wave forms when the song is dragged to timeline. Other non-protected stuff works fine. Funny it will play in the preview mode/button

    Playfair has become http://hymn-project.org/
you need a pc or a ipod to make it work! I have neither.....

If i could burn a disc i would have already -- jeez its only 15cents, but 10.2.8 and pioneer 107 doenst play nicely together....

    this is such a pain!!

I've got a few tracks here..let me test.
One I know was stored on my iPod that copied back to
    my iTunes library..."brandy--Full Moon".
It is converting from .mp4 straight to AIFF
    ( file-->Export-->Quicktime to AIFF).
    Playing back now plays fine.

I'm opening the track I just bought Friday night..
    "Sonique's Feels So Good."
The option to Export is now greyed out.

So apparently, I was slightly wrong in my statement.
You do have to either burn the tracks, or copy them to an iPod
(thus de-authroizing the DRM) and then you can do with them
    what you wish.

So the first have of my post remains true.
    These steps will work:

my second way would be ammended to such:

Now, even Duderino's statement is affected..
I cannot convert Sonique's track because
it flags the DRM. But, the Brandy track
I can, because the DRMhas been stripped,
and thus iTunes is converting it.

    hmmph..learn something new everyday!

  23. Okay then, use wiretap and be done with it. If you can play it on your Mac Wiretap can record it to mp3.
