  1. Hi, I captured a dv tape with Mainconcept at 8000 kbps, which went well. I then went ahead and did a dvd in tmpg, but at the output stage tmpg said that the dvd was over `x` amount and would be non-compliant.

I went ahead and it plays fine on my cheap dvd player.

Should I capture dv tape at less than 8000 kbps (vbr) in Mainconcept or is there something I should have ticked/unticked? Or can I ignore the `compliancy` thing to a certain extent?

When I capture hi-8 via my dv passthrough to firewire I capture at 6000 vbr and of course tmpg was happy to output that.

    Cheers

    Hello,
If you want to play it safe then yes, use a lower bitrate. I have done a high bitrate (9000 I think- it was a trailer) with tda and it played just fine. I think the dvd specs are really more flexible than they want you to know.

When you say 8000 VBR do you mean that 8000 was your average bitrate, or your max ?

I think TMPGEnc DVD Author issues warnings if you exceed a total of 9800kbps (video & audio combined).

If you have the option to ignore the warnings, it generally means that you should still be able to play the DVD, however there are no guarantees.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  4. Thanks guys.

I`m nowhere near home atm, but I believe it`s 8000 vbr, and yes tmpg did warn me of being non-compliant with a combined audio/video of over 9800 (i wasn`t a huge amount over though.... 99xx).

Still experimenting with Mainconcept.... love it, except for the `stop capturing after xxxx seconds` thing which doesn`t work..... would also be nice to have it in hours:minuteseconds like in real life if they do ever get it to work

any advice on the best ways to use Main would be appreciated. Will look around the site for some guides on it and bitrates for capturing as well.

With Mainconcept you can specify an average, min and max.

Try a min of 4k, avg of 6 and max of 7.8k -- that should give you the qlty you want and you should not encounter these problems.
