Never! Houses come and houses go. Using you're nest egg to save it leaves you with a house with empty cupboards, a repossesed car, and no utilities.
I just went through this a year ago. Gave the house to the bank (not a foreclosure), and had about $30K in ready funds to live off of for the next year. Took a little hit on credit, but still managed to buy a new car this year without getting raped on the terms. -
Hmmm... I was thinking otherwise.... right now my house payment is $1600.00. I have about 80k left and I have about 150k in retirement... with a little in savings... so should I loose my job... pay off house have about 20 left in retirement and not be worried about house payments for the rest of my life... And hey, I can go work at the Depot if needed to pay for electricity and gas....Originally Posted by tekkieman

Well, for your case, it might make sense. Now what if you had say, $172K left on the house? Would it still be the wisest move? Hard to say, everyone is different. Also would depend how close to retirement you are.

"At Perkins" huh tekkieman?
Make sure you tell them that Northcat says "**** YOU"...cheapskate bastards. -
I wondered how long it would take you to notice that. I was going to put "Fuckin Perkins", but a) it would be visible in all forums, and b) it would open me up to too many wiseass comments!Originally Posted by northcat_8

It was the first thing that popped into your head when I said that. I just put your thoughts into print for you. Some of the other thoughts you had were not suitable for print!Originally Posted by Capmaster

I say if you have enough available equity in your home and a steady job currently, take out a Home Equity Line of Credit and let it sit for emergencies. Let's say your house is worth $250k and you only owe $80k. Use your 401k to pay off the house and the Home Equity to tide you over until you get a steady job (about a month or 2). Then you can pay your utilities & Home Equity payment. I also say pay off your car when you pay off your mortgage. I try not to have auto liens. If I can take out a Home Equity or do a cash out refinance and use the extra funds to purchase the car, the intrest on the home is tax deductible, whereas the auto lien is not. Same thing with credit cards, and get rid of the balances that have non-deductible intrest.

Great advice -- When I bought the house I also got a 40k line of credit... so i'm good there. I was never sure about close hte loan on the house but would sleep better, jobless, if it were paid off.Originally Posted by Doramius

I got some fresh peaches from the neighbor's tree last night. We trade her our walnuts and plums for her peaches and persimmons.
They're perfect and delicious!
Having peach cobbler tonight!

Good way of thinking about it. What I say is pay off as much on your 1st mortgage. Do a Credit Line increase, but just don't use it. Again, pay off your car and credit card balances using the equity in the home. Then the only debt you have is on your home. The last thing financial institutions want to do is take away your home. If you pay it off free and clear, but have an Equity Line for emergencies, you have your safety blanket all set up. You could work as a greeter at wal-mart and still pay all your recurring bills, have money left over for savings, and an available equity line if ever you start running short on the funds. Not only is it comforting, but it doesn't leave your kids with debt when you pass away.Originally Posted by DVD_Ripper

I just popped to the server room downstairs to change backup tapes and noticed one of the air conditioning units is steadily dripping water onto the floor
there's quite a large puddle there at present.
