  1. Like the title says, ive got some American Coded NTSC dvd's, a Dvd burner, a PAL European PS2 and a whole lot of free time on my hands.

I managed (I think) to remove any and all css\region protection and get images\dvd's burned. They work in the comp im using just fine, but come up BLACK AND WHITE in the ps2. This has to do with the fact that the dvd's are ntsc right?

Before the general stuff I'll give a sepecific, the first move ive tried is Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, I ripped it with dvd decrypter and played with it in clonedvd2 till I got it down to a 1 dvd burnable size. Then I burned it and gave it a whirl in the ps2 - BAM! Black and white ... thats one disc wasted.

Ive wasted a few others trying a few other things and programs but no luck.

Is it possible to convert without magor quality loss and\or completely remastering the dvd? Id rather not re-create all the menus if at all possible

Plese help me out and tell me what my best bets are, buying things is froned upon but if it GREATLY increases ease of the process then I'll concider it, just please tell me how it can be done free first please

i guess the first question should be is if ANY ntsc disks have played normally in your setup ?

like the original ones .. because perhaps it is your TV , not the ps2 player

(i don't know if ps2 are ntsc or pal marked - i would think they dont care)

yes ntsc is the cause of the black and white. ur PS2 isnt the problem and making a copy won't help u. u need to change the colour system. what colour system does ur tv use? if it's a modern PAL tv then check ur settings. look for something like colour system. if u find it and it's set to PAL then either set it to AUTO or NTSC. if u don't have this ability, then u'll have to re-encode it to PAL using something like tmpgenc. This link will help. http://www.geocities.com/xesdeeni2001/StandardsConversion/

Hmm, not too sure about the any ntsc bit, I will have to give the setup a more thorough inspection tommorow (setups not mine so I know almost nothing about it)

Also, I dont know if any NTSC dvd's have ever been played, since a magority of them are region 1 right?

    AHRM.

This is NOT the place to discuss PS2 issues, but...

A simple one-wire fix inside your PS2 will cure the black and white issues.

Of course, if you're not brave enough to solder inside your PS2, then you will have to re-encode the video.

  7. yep,sounds like its either:
1.your tv isnt capable of NTSC recieving.
2.you need a scart lead for your tv,that way, your AV/external channels should be 60hz,and you might get it to work.
3.your ps2 needs a mod to it,like the RGB mod to take out the green screen on some dvds.
    4/re-encode it to PAL.

This is more than a ps2 issue, sorry if me posting this here offends you.

I'd usually be all gunge-ho about hacking stuff but alas... the ps2 is not mine, and I'd rather not piss off my relatives

  9. Alright people I looked at the TV and poked around in the options as much as I could, but did not find the option for NTSC\AUTO

I guess I should get one of those cable\filter things, can anyone give me a link? If they aren't too expensive id like to buy one in town later today, but if course I prefer to know what I'm buying

It COULD be fixed with the one wire in the PS2... all PS2's have the capability to output NTSC or PAL, the wire just puts them into "auto" mode. But if it ain't your PS2, then fear not - a conversion cable will do the trick.

Hey a quick question, is PAL video 50hz? Because on the back of the TV I noticed something that said 50\60hz and if ntsc is 60hz then...

  12. Alright, 2 more questions here:

Would something like this work? http://www.whitedog.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=135

Or would I need something like this (just for movies remember): http://www.whitedog.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=124

I dont know if id want to buy something like the second one, kind of expensive just to watch a few dvd's, the first one would be real cool if many game\computer places stocked it.

Yes, PAL is 50hz and NTSC is 60hz, but be careful - I dunno how they label POWER switches over there...

  14. Okay, so what I need is something that can\will convert the 50hz signal from the ps2 to 60hz? Would one of the above products do that?

that 50/60hz is in reference to the power, not the refresh rate. if u dont want to re-encode then yes u can get an inline converter, they cost about US$90. those ones u had links to might work. but it looks like at least one of them plugs into the usb port on the ps2, which might not work for movies. if i were u, i'd re-encode, unless u have heaps.
