Ha! It's begun. When it's down to about $6, I'll get a new burner.

Would have never guess that Sony would make the first move, but its fine by me.

I'm not upgrading until Pioneer makes a dual format/dual layer drive personally, I'm hopeing I can afford the disk by that time.

You call Verbatim DVD+R DL media "cheapo media"? They're made by Mitsubishi which actually developed the technology in co-operation with Philips.

Uhm, what did you expect since it's the only DL specification available?

They just recently announced the A08 and I doubt you'll see the A09 this year. Then you'll have to wait even longer for DVD-R DL media to show up...
BTW, what makes you think it's worth waiting for?

I looked at the page for that ten dollar media & it doesn't say verbatim on it anywhere, does it?

Pioneer a09? Shucks, a 108 is coming out in Aug. 16x dvd & 4x DL.

  11. Damn, what a freaking bargain! $9.99 for a single DL disc? Nice but thanks.
If I need to back up a long movie I'll use 2 SL discs. They cost ~ $1 for both if I buy them in bulk.

Mitsubishi is the only one who makes them right now.

Yes, but it's got to be nice to back up to a dual layer. For movies it's not economically worth it yet.

No but the first thing you thought when you saw a $10 DVD+R DL media at Sony Style was that it must be some "cheapo media"?
It's not hard to see it's Verbatim media as it has the typical "advanced azo" logo on it and the cover art is same as on all other Verbatim media sold in US.

Ritek DL media is also available.

Yes, you are correct. I forgot that they are making them to. Also Ricoh is in the mix as well.

What I was trying to get across to handyguy is that Verbatim is not a manufacture.

  17. Just for the record guys, these discs are Verbatim. They say it right on the top right hand corner. Sony just didn't want to advertise for them on their site. I picked some up for a project I'm working on for a family member.
