  1. hi there, i'm looking for a program that can help me convert mpeg's i take off my sony digital camera into a compressed video format that i can send to friends. i used to use windows movie maker becuase it used to have a limit to the output size, but the program has frozen my laptop for the last time.

So I'm just looking for a simple converter than can convert mpegs to avis, wmv's or mpeg's again, where you can set the max output size.

    Thanks for reading

    What?!?!
You're not gonna get more compressed than an Mpeg..

than can convert mpegs to avis
    That's backwards...

Are you talking about movie clips, or pictures?? Do you wanna email this stuff, web stream it, or put it on DVD??

where you can set the max output size
This is dictated by the bitrate that you set up before encoding....

What's your source, what's your destination, and for God's sake, what's your hardware??
Now, with that bit of information Luke Skywaker, read up on the Left hand side, and you too, will become a JEDI Night...

well they are really high resolution, i used to turn them into wmv's and they were fine.

movie clips, i just want to put them on the web for friends to download. so taking a clip thats 50mb to like 15 is the goal, retaining original quality doesnt really matter... just making them smaller and knowing how small they are going to be before hand.

indeed... im just looking to make it easier on myself, just click the size i want and let it encode instead of a bunch of trial and error.

You should fill out the computer details in your user profile.

    Alrighty, quick one...

You know how to output for .WMV from your previous posting...
Since you've already done this before, here's a few tips to get your filesize down..

    Video framesize should be 320x240
Video Bitrate should be around 500kbs (prefferably with Variable bitrate)
Audio should be about 22khz, 8 bit, mono.
Framerate should be 15fps (very important)

And as to your original posting..Windows Media Encoder should be good enough..
