  1. How Do I convince my 500A to remember its a 500A so that I can flash it with the latest firmware which will enhance its capabilities DRU-500A(X)/DRX-500UL(X)
This new firmware will ensure playback compatibility for DVD+R DL (double layer) disks.

    Firmware Version 2.1a*

    Download Updater - 500A_21a.zip

    *applicable to DRU500A, DRU500AX, DRX500UL and DRX500ULX

This is from the sony website but my 500 has forgotten its a 500 it thinks its a DW-U10A

  2. Just to update on my question previously I went over to the firmware site and after going through a few pages discovered the link to the software I required . There were a few dead links taking me to japanese or chinese 404 sites but with a bit of perseverence I found a good link to an american site. Nice job guys I have now upgraded to 21a and should now be compatible to the new DL media which I intend to use with a new liteon
SOHW-832S DL Burner So thanks again guys just for being here when Plebs like me need the help of background experts and enthusiasts which you guys obviously are.

  4. There is a whole (big) thread at the rpc1.org forum about the 500A <-> U10A conversion in both directions. It was a sticky at one point, but I dunno if it's a sticky now (too lazy to go check). Go visit rpc1.org and do a search of the forum. Since rpc1.org specializes in firmwares, it's usually the best place to look as the stuff there is generally pretty accurate.
