  1. I read up about encoding programs a while ago and found TMPGEnc to be the best all-rounder, but in a recent post of mine somebody said that TMPGEnc is very slow. With hyper-threading enabled it normally takes about 1/2 of the time of the captured video to encode. (ie. 5 minutes takes about 2mins 30 secs)

Does anybody then know of faster encoding software with as good qualit as TMPGEnc? Or is it just a myth?

  2. Try Mainconcept MPEG Encoder - I have been very happy with the quality of their software.

Actually that is a real good time fot Tmpgenc. Do as DVD_Ripper stated. I use Mainconcept and IMO the quality is excellent and it is 3-4x faster then Tmpgenc. Don't know about the hyper-threading because I only have a P4 1.7.

  4. Seems to be very limited in its functions, but cannot find an option for the source range, like where to begin and where to end?
I could cut the avi first using vdub but that is more waiting time than I wanted {:¬/

Does anybody know if it has such a feature?

Mainconcept doesn't have this feature, as it is designed for the professional market, where you would have prepared your footage correctly. Tmpgenc is nice, but it is trying to be too much of a swiss army knife, however for the market it is aimed at, it is a great product. The trade off is speed.
