Hello, here is my little story:
Some days ago I started to make my first VCD. I uses WinOnCD to make it.
I couldn't FF/RW the VCD, but after updating my DVD to firmware version 7.22, this worked.
BTW: Burning the firmware update was only possible with Nero, the WinOnCd version did't work.

Then I generated SVCD and now my problems starts: Audio has sometimes, every 10 seconds or so,
drop outs; means there is a short pause, then audio continues. Video is ok.

    I used following:
    - 350MHz P-II (slow, I know, but for encoding this should not be a problem!?)
    - Captured AVIs from my ATI AIW pro (320 x 200, not the best quality, was only for testing)
    - TMPGenc 12h beta with SVCD PAL profile
    - Nero 5.5 to burn the CD
    - Philips DVD 761 to play it (I have no DVD in my PC)

I tried also a proposal to extract audio out of the AVI (with VirtualDub) into
a WAV file and used TMPGenc to encode the MPG with the video and audio source,
but the result was the same: Drop outs in audio.

Then I downloaded MATRIX.MPG sample and burned it. With this SVCD I have no sound problems!
Maybe there is a special setting within TMPGenc or something else?

It would be great if someone could give me a hint to solve my audio problem.

    Some further results:
Now I'm able to burn SVCDs without audio drop outs. I used following settings in TMPGenc:
    1.: Audio stream=128 kb/s Sampling rate=44,1kHz or
    2.: Audio stream=160 kb/s Sampling rate=48,0kHz

But I think at least the last setting (48kHz) isn't a SVCD standard, because Nero complains this setting.

So in principle I can burn my CDs with these settings, but what is, if I will play the SVCD on an other DVD player?

What are the standards for a SVCD? Ok, audio stream rate can be differ within a range, but what is with the sampling rate? TMPGenc uses 44,1 kHz as a default for VCD and SVCD, but in the manual of my player at least for a VCD a sampling rate of 48kHz is written. What is correct? What is the influence of the different rates?
Maybe there is an other solution? Has no other one problems with a Philips DVD and SVCD?

The majority of yout questions can be answered by going to the "What Is" section of this website and checking the "VCD" and SVCD" pages. Here you'll find examples and definitons of what you are looking for.

As for the Philips manual saying that VCD should be written at 48Khz rate is somewhat strange and probably a typo/printer error. As Philips (with JVC) themselves standardized the specifications for VCD it is rather odd, as it is cleary 44.1Khz.
