Hi. I want to subtitle an AVI on my own. I've got the script done. Usually, I sub by using Virtualdub and stopping the playback when there is dialogue. But that just takes too long. I found a feature in Sub Station Alpha that you can time the subs using a WAV file. My AVI has VBR MP3 so I used Virtualdub to extract it as a WAV, direct stream copy. I opened it in SSA but it said it is not the valid Windows PCM WAV. The WAV is 48000 Hz. I read SSA's help documents and it says that SSA needs: 8-bit mono wave, 11025 Hz, and Windows PCM WAV format.
I used BeSweet to get that sampling rate, I think I got the format correct by choosing PCM (Wave/AIFF) and I selected 16-bit stereo wave since there is no 8-bit mono anywhere. So now I have a WAV file with very squeaky and high-paced voices.I tried using Audacity but it froze up on me.

Remember, you are only using the mono sampling rate to time the subtitle. Once it is properly timed and saved, use the original audio for your video.
